Project Progress

So far, me and Ben are still in the research stage of our project–looking at different ways of recycling technology and if/where they are any on campus. We’r in the process of contacting Do-It Tech about the recycling bins as well to see if they have any or if they have any interesting feedback. Once we figure out exactly what this tool for recycling used electronics is, we’d like to see them installed in Memorial Union and Union South, for this is obviously a popular place for the student population.

Project Proposal

I’m conducting the sustainability project with Ben Pauley and we just recently changed our project proposal. Its unclear exactly what we will be doing at this point, but we’d like to conduct something along the lines of recycling technology. Ben recently brought up the good point that he hasn’t seen any areas or bins where you can dispose of faulty or old technology such as cell phones and other electronics. We plan on researching if Madison has any such recycling bins and if not, why. If possible, maybe by the help of the student council or other organizations, we’d like to put some of these recycling bins around campus–possibly as an experiment or maybe permanent–thats why we need to research the pros/cons and feasibility of this idea.

In my sustainability narrative, I stressed the importance of technology and how it probably hope in humans someday reaching a symbiotic, sustainable state in the world. We need to channel our technology into being more efficient and less destructive/clean, whether we’re talking about farming techniques and maintaining the land, or cleaner, more efficient energy resources. This idea can definitely be tied into our project proposal–based around the question of how we can use technology to be sustainable if we don’t use/recycle it efficiently. It also brings up the point how technology is a gift and a curse that can cause and accelerate unsustainable activity.
